Race & Event OverviewIf you are at all similar to the other participants in this event; you live for a good weekend… you live for the opportunity to escape the shackles of everyday life, to get some fresh air, mix with some mates, tackle a challenge and enjoy an adventure. If this sounds like you then welcome to your nirvana.
Set amongst the picturesque Otway Ranges and Great Ocean Road landscapes around Lorne in Victoria’s south, the Anaconda Adventure Race gives you all this and more as an off-road sporting event and terrific weekend of fun. (So it’s of no great surprise that doing ‘The Anaconda’ has become a bit of an institution around the country!!)
Take part in this spectacular event you will swim across the crystal clear Loutit Bay in Lorne, paddle along the cliffs and golden beaches flanking the Great Ocean Road; run through rainforests and mountain bike down heart thumping descents with 1200 or your newest best mates. As race three in the Anaconda Adventure Race International Series, the Anaconda Adventure Race at Lorne is an achievable challenge that anyone can be part of.
Combine all this action with an adventure expo with kids entertainment, live commentary, food, drinks, displays and free stuff(!) and you’ve found the weekend you’ve been hankering for.
You can GO THE DISTANCE.
Choose your style and get involved - the Anaconda Adventure Race can be completed in a range of categories to get anyone and everyone to onto the start then over the finish line:
- Individuals – do every leg as a non stop race around the track. Designed for heros and want-to-bes
- Pairs – do every leg but in the company of your mate who’s by your side the whole way round
- Relay teams – with up to 4 people where you do one (or more) legs each. A great way to get involved without being a super hero – build up a team of friends and work colleagues and join all the fun

A lot of Anaconda Adventure Race competitors might have noticed the absence of our 2008 women’s series champion - Christie Sym - from this year’s events. Well Christie has turned her very skilled hand towards triathlon and on the same weekend as we held the Lorne Anaconda Adventure Race, Christie tackled her first Ironman with incredible style – here is her race report. Click here for full story ... Christie Sym - what ripper day continued(Posted 24/12/2009)
I have never run a marathon, let alone after a 3.8 km swim and a 180 km bike. So you can imagine that my usually high level of confidence was squashed much alike the possums I see on my morning rides at this point of the race. Equally as fearful of the sun, which on this particular day was doing it’s best to burn a hole in the road, I made sure to slap on enough sunscreen to look akin to a snowman. I tore out of transition in pursuit of Gina, OK no, sorry that is incorrect; I tore out of transition running scared! In all honesty I was waiting for the field to swallow me whole and spit me out, just like the fly I encountered a couple of hours later.
Despite this fear, much like the monster hiding under your bed when you’re a small child, the field never actually swallowed me whole. In fact I held my position of 2nd place for an entire 3 hours and 20 minutes, holding off what was in average about a minute back to 3rd place the entire run. The spectators along the course were fantastic support, although I never really believed that I looked good and was running fast . . . no I would not describe it that way at all! Ice cubes became my very best of friends, even if they didn’t seem to return the love, disappearing almost as quickly as I picked them up. Flies on the other hand did appear to like me, it’s just a shame they weren’t part of my nutrition plan. There’s something not quite right about six little legs crawling at the back of your throat, yuk! So I continued the viscous cycle of dreaming about aid stations, water, ice, coke, dreaming of aid stations and repeat. Oh and there was the occasional relief provided by some garden hoses and people dressed up in funny costumes trying to shoot me with water! Thank you, perhaps one day I will be able to return the favour.
Reaching the finish chute was an incredibly welcomed moment, and although keeping an eye on my back it was great to soak it up and share the moment with the enthusiastic children hanging out their small hands for high 5’s. All of the hard work, the hours of time dedicated to training, the endless debates over reasons why and why not to make the switch from adventure racing to triathlon . . . and I didn’t even look at my time! I am told this is a criminal offense in the land of IM racing, but I was never arrested so assume I’m safe. In fact I had finished, congratulated 3rd place getter Sarah on finishing, been whisked off to the medical tent to melt some more ice as my body was as hot as an Aussie Summer BBQ, and I still hadn’t even considered my finishing time. I almost collapsed when they told me, it was only then that I became non responsive and required an IV, which after about half way through I announced that I was bored and would like to leave, if that was OK!?
So one down, many more to go, and now I know what all the fuss is about! A big thank you to all of my family and friends for providing an incredible amount of support, I think my phone worked harder than myself last weekend, it really blew me away. A very big thanks to all of the volunteers who gave up their day to have people endlessly yell “water, coke, BANANA!" (yep loved those bananas!), and to the supporters who came to the race to cheer us to the finish line, squirt us with water, and tell us how good we looked, even if it was a little fib. Finally a thank you to all the other athletes out on the course, I enjoyed sharing the day with you, and especially my competitors, for giving me someone to chase and to run away from!
(What time did she do... 9:20.40 VERY IMPRESSIVE. Well done from all of us at Rapid Ascent)
Attention all adventurers - The world’s biggest adventure race returns to Augusta for another year(Posted 18/12/2009)
We are delighted to announce that the Western Australian leg of the 2010 Anaconda Adventure Race International Series will again be held at Augusta after the enthusiasm the new race venue received from competitors and the community from the 2009 event. Click here for full story ... Grant Suckling - Race report from the Anaconda Adventure Race, Lorne(Posted 16/12/2009) Those who know me, know what this race means to me and why. It was the first time I tried my hand at Adventure Racing towards the end of 2006. In my wildest dreams I couldn’t have hoped to take the journey I have since then. At the time, I day-dreamed about one day being good enough to race the entire Anaconda series and be a contender for a top 10 finish in at least one race. Click here for full story ...Grant Suckling - Race report from the Anaconda Adventure Race, Lorne (Cont)(Posted 16/12/2009) Holy crap…! The moment is frozen in my mind as the defining moment of the race, and what happened next was something I wish everyone could have seen. Sean picked up his bike in a flash and ran flat out down the hill like a man possessed. The track was barely rideable, very narrow and pretty much the most treacherous part of the course. The event consisted of a 1.9km ocean Swim, 13km ocean paddle, 15km Keen coastal trail run, 24km Raceworx mountain bike and a 1.5km beach run to the finish line Click here for full story ... Lorne Anaconda Adventure Race - Dad wins with daughter's pep talk(Posted 5/12/2009) Geelong's Grant Suckling employed the wisdom of his little girl to win the Lorne Anaconda Adventure Race on Sunday morning, crossing the line before a crowd of 3,000-plus spectators, just 30 seconds ahead of arch rival Perth's Sean O'Neill. At one stage Suckling was convinced he'd lost the race to five-time WA
triathlon of the year O'Neill, who was race favourite after claiming
open men's line honours in the last two Anaconda Adventure Races in Queensland and Western Australia. Click here for full story ...

Paddling
Not being a paddler is no longer a valid excuse for not giving the Anaconda a crack. We have a range of paddling sessions leading up to the event that will get even the most beginner paddlers surfing down waves and whooping with delight all the way around the paddle course!
Surf Ironman legend (and recent convert to multisport & adventure racing), Bruce Dunlop, conducts kayak training sessions in Torquay year round, and then runs larger group sessions and special paddle camps in the last few months leading up to the race.
For Melbourne bound competitors, last year's winner and Bass Strait conqueror Jarad Kohlar from Peak Adventure is also conducting weekly kayak training sessions at Sandridge Life Saving Club, whilst Tim Altman who is another very accomplished paddler with many national and international titles to his name is also running sessions around Melbourne and the Surf Coast. {Click here for more details}
