Brisbane - The 2010 inaugural Fusion Games attracted over 300 competitors in cycling Criteriums and Duathlons. In 2011, the Games raised over 400 competitors and 2 extra events were included in the day’s program: a social bike ride and a corporate teams’ Criterium. The event has already gained the support of enthusiasts Brisbane wide, local businesses and major corporate companies invested in the Newstead/Teneriffe waterfront.
Be sure this year’s participants will enjoy the same excellent rider support and overall atmosphere of fun that was enjoyed in the previous 2 editions of the Fusion Games.
“The success of the 2011 Fusion Games exceeded expectations on all sides. We’re looking forward to improving on that this year." Race director and event organiser Mike Crawley said. In its third year, the only inner-city cycling event in Brisbane will again include participation for families, individuals, teams, competitive, social and corporate.
This year though, several legends and celebrities will hop on CityCycle bikes and ride around the 1.2km course for 20 minutes + 2 laps. Even though this race is just for fun, participants will ride for a cause and raise funds for the Amy Gillett Foundation which promotes safe road cycling in Australia. Mike Crawley said “I am thrilled to have the Amy Gillett Foundation as our charity for the Fusion Games". He went on to say “the fundraising side will be run like a horse race, spectators will bet on the competitor of their choice and if their competitor wins, they get a prize – but the money from their bet goes to the charity".
Some Australian legends and celebrities are already up for the challenge with more expected to join. Shane Walker (Rugby League), Elle Armit (Waterpolo), Peter Nowill and Patrick Nispel (Marathon), Jordan Mowen (Beach Volleyball) as well as members of the local government and the Brisbane City Council will attempt to complete the course on the 25 kilogram bikes and fight for the title of CityCycle Criterium champion.
The Fusion Games will take place in Newstead on Sunday 22 July.
