adventuresportnz.com take the Keen Adventure Race cake

(Posted 4/14/2008)

The Keen Adventure Race has its winner for 2008. New Zealanders Gordon Walker and Chris Forne from Team adventuresportnz.com finished in 4th place (3rd among official teams) to preserve a 5 hour+ lead over the Orion Health Mixed team of Stuart Lynch and Anna Berthelsen.

The (very large) margin of victory (overall) also ensured that they took home handicap honours, with an adjusted time that was still 2 hours faster than Orion Health Mixed, who lost crucial time in two points of the race: a 2 hour penalty for using an out of bounds road early on Stage 3, and an additional hour in the final transition recovering from an asthma attack in the early hours of Friday morning .

adventuresportnz.com take home $12,000 for their troubles, while Orion Health Mixed take home $8,000, courtesy of their 2nd place overall + the mixed category prize. Kath Copland and Thor Egerton of team Sut Map lead from start to finish in the female pairs category to comfortably take out the category and a $2,000 kitty.

21 teams (from 39 starters) managed an official finish, with 10 teams completing the full course in what proved to be a very tough, although scenic and spectacular course.

Keen Adventure Race: Stage 3 has a winner

(Posted 4/11/2008)

adventuresportnz.com have taken out stage 3 of the Keen Adventure Race - Alps To Ocean. Gordon Walker and Chris Forne have smoked the field to arrive in Omeo, Victoria at 5:09am this morning. Such was their lead, that second placed team - Orion Health Mixed (Stuart Lynch and Anna Berthelsen) hadn't even started the final 3 hour mountain bike from Angler's Rest to Omeo. Gordon & Chris avoided all penalties on the longest stage of the race and will take a 5-6 hour lead into the final stage starting from Buchan to Lakes Entrance tomorrow.

Earlier, adventuresportnz.com's Gordon Walker and Chris Forne had won stage 2 from Falls Creek to Mt Beauty by 25 minutes - also over the Orion Health Mixed team from New Zealand. The top Australians - SILVA Stingers from New South Wales were 3rd on Stage 2 after having taken out stage 1, but having now lost another 2 hours to Orion Mixed look unlikely to be able to push for 2nd place overall.

Last night's stage saw a couple of notable withdrawals, with BLASTERS.com, who were running in 3rd place having avoided all penalties, and Orion Health Boys who were also very highly placed, both losing a team member and withdrawing.

There are 28 teams from our 39 starters still in the running for an official finish. The teams at the front of the race are battling it out for $30,000 prize money, the richest race of its type in Australia.

Follow the progress in our Live Updates section.

Keen Adventure Race: Stage 1 (Prologue)

(Posted 4/8/2008)

by Jacqueline Windh for Sleepmonsters
Several lead changes, on what was a much tougher stage than many had expected, made for a very exciting day. John’s “net downhill" course had racers popping up and down from the hilltops to the lake – so even though the finish line was 200 m lower than the start, racers logged a cumulative gain for the day of about 600 m, on foot and on bike. The routes all provided for lots of options, and therefore strategy. Teams started with a run ...   Click here for full story ...
