Anaconda Adventure Race - Gold Coast This Weekend(All events - Posted 2/09/2010)
Get ready for some action and exploration this weekend on the Gold Coast as the Anaconda Adventure Race National Series rolls into town. Over a thousand athletes of all ages will head to Palm Beach Parklands to take on the challenge with events and entertainment happening throughout the weekend. Headlining the participants are local triathlon legend Brad Beven and former ironman star Guy Leech who are teaming up together to try this new and exciting contest for them in the first of the three race Series.
On Saturday afternoon at 4pm the Anaconda Junior Survivor starters gun will set around 500 kids off on a 4km fun obstacle course. The youngest entrant so far is 4-year-old Herb Hunter from Currumbin. He’s been dying to do it since watching big brother, 6-year-old Darcy, have a ball completing it last year. A natural athlete already, Herb does swimming, karate and tennis lessons each week which will no doubt provide him with necessary skills to competently perform the wading, sand running, spider’s web and other challenges he’ll face throughout the course. Shaking off a cold he is sure he’ll still finish but will keep his main aim in his sights and that is to knock Darcy off in the family competition. Sean, Herb’s dad, says that he’ll easily be able to do it all as he does similar kinds of activities in the backyard every day, “he’s an active little fella and will just run with the other kids. I might follow him for some of it but he’ll be fine. He’ll love it", Sean said. A champion in the making perhaps.
On the other spectrum and equally as incredible is the most senior competitor 63-year-old Jan Gielis from Kingscliff, NSW. Jan is doing the 15km kayak leg as a member of the team Three Boilers and a Babe in the Anaconda Adventure Race that kicks off at 8am on Sunday 5th September. The kayak leg is the second leg after the 1.9km ocean swim that her friend Michelle van der Broek is doing. Jan’s paddle leg will take her on a scenic course along the coast northwards from Currumbin Alley passing Palm Beach with spectacular views toward Surfers Paradise before she heads up Tallebudgera Creek to discover a less explored but just as beautiful part of the region.
The youngest and ‘babe’ of the team, Chanel van der Broek, will then do a 12km trail run through the hinterland and the final team member and mountain biker, Susan Gett, will mountain bike 18km back to Palm Beach. All team members, including Jan, will then run 2km together to the finish line. Tired yet? Yes. Extremely satisfied? Definitely. It’ll be Jan’s fifth year doing the ski leg and she’s the experienced member of the team of all first timers. She comes back each year because she just loves to be involved and the team camaraderie. “Michelle is a friend from way back and Chanel is her niece. I’ve never met Susan as she’s from Sydney, but we’ll still have a great time". Next challenge for this inspirational woman is the World Surf Life Saving Championships in Egypt next month.
The good thing about adventure racing is that it brings together athletes of all types and backgrounds. Former World Champion triathlete Brad Beven is teaming up with ex ironman Guy Leech to form a formidable two man team with Brad doing the run and ride and Guy the swim and paddle. Even these two over accomplished athletes will be out of their comfort zones as they race alongside Three Boilers and a Babe. They will be joined by a unique mix of triathletes, surf life savers, runners, cyclists and paddlers in an event that unites athletes of all backgrounds with most competitors racing in a team of between two and four people doing it as a relay.
Hot favourite in the women is veteran school teacher from Noosa, Kim Beckinsale, who took out the 2009 Series title and is still looking good. In the men’s race it is Grant Suckling from Geelong in Victoria who looks to be in the best form. Runner-up in the 2009 Series he is focusing on this event and has put in a solid winter in preparation.
Race Director, John Jacoby, says that the Anaconda Adventure Race weekend will be a blast and will have something or everyone. “Entries are still open for both the Anaconda Junior Survivor and Anaconda Adventure Race so
email Nicola to enter. Competitors and spectators will also enjoy plenty of entertainment and stalls at the race Expo so there’s no time to get bored".
He also made mention of sponsors and partners who have contributed to it being such a success. In particular, the Anaconda Adventure Race Gold Coast is benefiting from funding under the Queensland Events Regional Development Program (QERDP). The QERDP is an investment program designed to extend the flow of economic and social benefits of events to regional Queensland. A state-wide initiative, the program is committed to enhancing existing events in regional Queensland, as well as assisting in the establishment of new events. Since the QERDP began in 2001, more than $15.3 million has been invested in 705 regional events, an indicator of the important role these events play in their communities and wider Queensland
The Gold Coast round is the first in the three race Series that moves to Augusta in the Margaret River region of WA before finishing in Lorne on the Great Ocean Road in Victoria on December 7th. For more information click here
